In honour of Mats Paulsson’s 80th birthday, the Mats Paulsson Foundations have decided to double this year's donations to a total of SEK 50 million. Of this sum, SEK 3 million has been allocated to WCMM Clinical Researcher Sandra Lindstedt for her ground-breaking project titled “An Innovative ATMP Strategy to Improve Lung Transplantations: HLA-Silenced Stem Cells.”
The project targets two critical issues currently facing lung transplantation: “How can the pool of available donor organs be expanded?” and “How can survival rates for transplant recipients be improved?”. Sandra Lindstedt’s work has high potential for innovation, as it aims to introduce a novel type of lung for transplantation while pioneering the development of new therapies in a field with limited competition.
The project’s goal is to create a product readily applicable in clinical settings, backed by proof-of-concept data on the effectiveness of HLA-silenced mesenchymal stem cells, paving the way for future phase I clinical trials. Ultimately, this new treatment approach aims to increase the availability of organs, reduce graft dysfunction, mortality rates, and healthcare costs.
